Magic Lanterns is a video production company with studios in Tokyo and Melbourne. We specialise in the creation of online video content and work with small teams to create videos ranging from premium quality commercials and music videos to short, shot from the hip style, documentaries, video art and films.
Originally an in-house facility, producing short artist documentaries for Backwoods Gallery, our videos have, over the years, attracted the attention of clients such as Google, Pierre Hermes Paris, Hong Kong Tramways, Yamaha and Jacobs Creek. The success of these projects has caused us to realise that there is a strong market for the skills of our unique network of artists, musicians and filmmakers. With that in mind, on January 2016 we launched Magic Lanterns in order to offer our services to commercial clients and pursue new projects under a cohesive banner.
Magic Lanterns is directed by Alexander Mitchell. Alex is the founder and artistic director of Backwoods Gallery, one of Australia’s leading contemporary arts galleries. He brings over a decade of experience in arts and culture, and is accustomed to managing large-scale projects with multiple artists.
